How it Works

The PureLife uses regular tap water and a small amount of salt to create a powerful cleaning solution that removes pesticides, bacteria, and other contaminants.

The solution attacks the harmful substances on your produce and decomposes the pesticide molecules so they can easily be rinsed off with water.

Electrolysis is the process by which electrical current is used to produce a chemical change. Electrical current is produced by the displacement of electrons or ions.

How does the PureLife use Electrolysis?
The PureLife electrolyzes water (H2O) containing some sodium chloride (Salt, also known as NaCI).
The process gives
2NaCl + 2H2O → 2NaOH + H2 + Cl2 (Electrolysis)
Which means, two useful compounds are generated: chlorine (CI2, a strong oxidant and widely used disinfectant) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH).
NaOH and H2 are produced at the cathode and Cl2 at the anode. (The two 'poles' you see when opening the lid of the PureLife)
In addition, sodium hypochlorite (solution made from reacting chlorine with a sodium hydroxide solution)appears as a product of the following reaction:
2NaOH + Cl2 → NaOCl + H2O + NaCl
Which means, sodium hypochlorite (NaOCI, also a strong oxidant and disinfectant) is generated.
Both chlorine and sodium hypochlorite attack and decompose the pesticide molecules.
Why does Electrolysis remove bacteria and pesticides from produce?
Both Cl2 and NaOCl are strong oxidizing agents that attack bacteria and decompose the pesticide molecules.
Why is salt necessary - and how does it work?
Common salt is sodium chloride. The salt solution contains sodium and chloride ions (Na+ and Cl-), needed for electrical conductivity. Also, as indicated above, the chloride ions give chlorine (Cl2), a strong oxidizing and disinfectant.
